15-year-old bicyclist struck, killed by car west of WPB; police suspect DUI
A 15-year-old boy riding a bicycle was killed Sunday evening when he was struck by a car on a major road in suburban West Palm Beach, according to Palm Beach County sheriff’s officials.
The boy, a West Palm Beach resident whose name was not released because he was a juvenile, was riding north on South Military Trail near Summit Boulevard just after 5 p.m., the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said. Behind him was a 2018 Infiniti Q50 driven by Wilfredo Luis Colon, 25, of Pompano Beach, that was just crossing the intersection with Summit Boulevard, deputies said.
According to two witnesses, Colon’s car struck the juvenile’s bicycle, which was riding in the travel lane, with the front driver’s-side of his vehicle. After hitting the bicycle, the car dragged the boy a few feet before he came to rest, deputies said.
Colon, who sustained minor injuries in the collision, left the scene and drove to a nearby parking lot, deputies said, but then returned. Police suspect Colon was impaired with alcohol or drugs, and charges are pending, the sheriff’s office report said.
The boy was wearing dark clothing and riding without lights, deputies said. He was declared dead at 5:39 p.m., the report said.
