Police: Girl, 6, struck, killed by pick-up truck on Auburndale roadway

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Auburndale police are investigating a pedestrian crash that killed a 6-year-old girl early Wednesday.

According to authorities, the child was struck by a pick-up truck in the intersection of US 92 and Havendale Blvd. just before 6:30 a.m.

Auburndale Police Chief Andy Ray identified the child killed as Ra’Nesha Jackson.

Ray said it appears the child ran into the street and was struck by the truck. With still-dark conditions at that time of the morning, the driver was not aware of what he hit and went another three miles before being flagged down.

Ray said the driver returned to the scene, was not impaired and was visibly upset when realizing what happened.

An investigation is ongoing into why the child, a kindergartener at Auburndale Central Elementary, was trying to cross the busy roadway alone.

Officials said counselors will be on hand at the school for students and staff members.

Ray said the girl possibly could have been looking for her mother and that’s why she left the house. Ray added the Department of Child and Family has been called to home before where the girl lived over concerns about other children in the home.
