ST. PETERSBURG — A 36-year-old Sun City Center man died early Tuesday after he missed a curve on Interstate 175, became airborne and crashed into the wall of a church, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened at 12:03 a.m. at the eastern end of the highway near Fifth Avenue South.
The man was heading east on I-175 into downtown St. Petersburg when he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. The car spun through the Fifth Avenue South exit, hit a curb, became airborne and hit the brick wall of a building at 515 Fourth St S, the address of St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Church.
The car then overturned. The driver died at the scene.
