Street sweeper driver dies after crash at Brandon Publix parking lot

BRANDON — A man driving a street sweeper died in a Brandon Publix parking lot Friday night after a crash ejected him out of the vehicle and he was run over by it, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a statement.

A 57-year-old man from Thonotosassa was cleaning the parking lot of Publix Super Market at Brandon Mall with a 2021 street sweeper, the highway patrol said. The driver left the parking lot to make a U-turn on Brandon Boulevard and get back into the same lot. During the turn, the street sweeper hit a 2016 Chevy Corvette traveling east on Brandon Boulevard.

The street sweeper driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, fell out of the vehicle and the street sweeper kept moving forward, the highway patrol said, running over the driver. He died from his injuries at the scene.

The Corvette driver, a 43-year-old man from Seffner, suffered serious injuries.
