Sunrail train crash with semi truck shuts down south Orange Ave traffic

A Sunrail train was in collision Wednesday morning involving a semi truck and has southbound Orange Avenue traffic shut down, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. near the Wetherbee Road intersection and involved a semi truck, the FHP said. No injuries were reported. Jessica Ottaviano, a spokeswoman with Sunrail, confirmed it was a Sunrail train involved in the incident with11 passengers inside — none of them were injured.

A 54-year-old Daytona man was driving a semi truck carrying a forklift, west on Wetherbee and crossed the track when an unknown vehicle cut in front of the truck, preventing it from clearing the railway, said the FHP’s Kim Montes. The crossing arms were activated and trapped the truck in place. The Sunrail train then collided with the rear portion of the truck’s trailer, Montes said.

Two SUVs were struck by truck debris, Montes said.

Crews are still cleaning the scene causing traffic delays.

The Sunrail schedule also has been impacted as a result of the crash.

Sunrail tweeted that its P303 southbound train is canceled.

The crash remains under investigation.
