Ormond Beach man killed, another seriously injured in head-on crash on Volusia highway
A 59-year-old Ormond Beach was killed, and another seriously injured Wednesday night after driving on the opposite side of the road and crashing head-on into a pickup truck on a Volusia County highway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
At 7:35 p.m., the 59-year-old man was driving a 2000 Chevy Trailer Blazer west in the eastbound lane on State Road 40 near Appaloosa Lane, according to the FHP’s spokeswoman Lt. Kim Montes. A second Ormond Beach man, 64, was driving a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck eastbound at around the same time. The two collided, hitting each other’s front right side.
Both men were wearing seatbelts, but the 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, Montes said. The 64-year-old was seriously injured and taken to Halifax Medical Center.
It is unknown why the first man was driving west in the eastbound lane at this time, Montes said, but troopers are investigating.
