1 man killed, several others injured in Orange County construction zone multivehicle crash
A 35-year-old man died early Monday and several others were injured in a multivehicle crash taking place in a construction zone in south Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
At 2:30 a.m. a 26 year-old Orlando man was driving a sedan south on Narcoossee Road and approaching a construction zone near the Emerson Lake Boulevard intersection, said the FHP’s Lt. Kim Montes. Meanwhile, a John Hall Construction pickup truck, driven by a 34-year-old man of Orlando, was traveling north within the zone, Montes said.
The sedan driver failed to drive within the traffic shift and traveled into the construction lanes and struck the oncoming John Hall truck. As result, the truck was sent into the path of two men who were standing in the construction zone near stationary pickup trucks, one was 35-years-old of Ocoee and the other 48-years-old of Apopka, Montes said.
After the crash, the Orlando sedan driver exited the vehicle and ran toward a nearby marsh, however he was detained by two off duty Florida agricultural officers, who were working with the construction site. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Montes said.
First responders arrived and pronounced the Ocoee man dead at the scene, Montes said. The Apopka man was rushed to the Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Two other John Hall pickup truck drivers also received minor injuries, Montes said.
Troopers are investigating, and charges are pending against the sedan driver.
