Speeding SUV kills driver stopped at light near Sawgrass Mills, police say

SUNRISE, Fla. – A driver stopped at a light was killed when a Lexus SUV slammed into the back of their Nissan sedan late Thursday night in Sunrise, police say.

A body was removed from the badly damaged silver Nissan that remained at the intersection of Northwest 136th Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard early Friday morning, about a block away from the Sawgrass Mills mall.

The dark Lexus SUV with front-end damage was towed away.

Sunrise police say the crash happened shortly before midnight. They say the Lexus was driving north on 136th Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a Nissan that was at a stoplight.

The driver of Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Lexus were taken to Broward Health Medical Center with minor injuries.

The intersection was blocked off in both directions for several hours as investigators worked the scene.

Further details about the people involved in the crash have not been released.
