Woman dies after golf cart plunges into St. James City canal

ST. JAMES CITY, Fla. – A 95-year-old woman died after a golf cart plunged into a canal in St. James City.

Family members identified Marge Teach as the woman whose body was found in the 5000 block of Curlew Drive on Monday morning.

Steve Lutz confirmed Teach was his grandmother.

“Just a little shocked,” Lutz said. “My grandma just got clean bills of health from like three different doctors telling her she was good, and we were joking she’d probably live to be 100 years old.”

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they were investigating a death in the area that did not appear to be suspicious.

Investigators said a call came in just after 8:20 a.m.

Witnesses told a golf cart was seen submerged in a canal in the area just before Teach’s body was found. Deputies were spotted taking pictures of the golf cart after the incident.

Don Camp lived across the street from Teach for years.

“We hope it’s not Marge because she’s such a sweet friend, been so good to us and everything,” Camp said hours before learning it was indeed his friend pulled from the canal. “She was a very lively person for that age.”

No further details were immediately available.
