Bicyclist killed in San Carlos Park hit-and-run crash
SAN CARLOS PARK, Fla. – A bicyclist was killed in a crash on US 41 near Babcock Road in San Carlos Park Thursday night.
Around 9:25 p.m. a 69-year-old Fort Myers man was trying to cross US 41 on his bicycle when he was hit by a pickup truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The bicyclist landed on the inside lane of US 41 when he was hit by another car driven by a 35-year-old Naples woman, troopers said.
The woman then lost control and crashed into a tree. The Fort Myers bicyclist was pronounced dead on scene.
Investigators said the driver of the pickup truck took off from the crash with the bicycle still wedged underneath the truck.
The pickup truck was found about a mile away from the crash on Doral Drive, but the driver had run away, according to FHP.
The truck has been impounded and will be forensically analyzed.
Investigators are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol or Southwest Florida Crimestoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.
