One man dead after major crash destroys store in Jacksonville’s Westside
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — JSO has reported a fatal traffic crash at the intersection of San Juan Ave. and Cassat Ave.
At approximately 2:15 a.m. Sunday, an SUV traveling westbound on San Juan Ave. collided with a sedan traveling southbound on Cassat Ave. Upon collision, the SUV was redirected into the front of the San Juan Corner Store and Wine at the southwest corner of the intersection.
The SUV driver was pronounced dead on the scene. The sedan’s occupants were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The age of the deceased man is still unknown, but the sedan’s occupants are confirmed to be in their 20s.
Police say it is too early to tell if anyone was driving under the influence but say they will be investigating if alcohol was involved and the speed at which the vehicles were traveling.
“At two o’clock in the morning, speed and alcohol are going to be things we’re going to look into,” Sergeant Robert Peck with JSO said.
This is the 34th fatal crash to occur in Duval County this year, and the Jacksonville public is concerned, especially those who live in the area.
“I was just surprised and shocked that this happened in this area,” said Deitre Jackson, who lives in the area. “More police should be out, especially in the nighttime, because this is when this stuff happens.”
