Authorities: 1 dead, 5 hurt after RV overturns on I-295 near Old St. Augustine Road
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One person was killed and five people were injured Monday in a crash involving an RV on northbound Interstate 295 near Old St. Augustine Road, authorities said.
About 11:15 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of the RV lost control and struck a sedan. Troopers said both vehicles went off the roadway, with the RV overturning. Two of the RV passengers were thrown from the vehicle, troopers said.
One of the RV passengers — a 48-year-old man from Oklahoma — died at the scene, troopers said.
The Highway Patrol said all other occupants were taken to area hospitals.
The three other RV passengers — a 69-year-old man, a 75-year-old man and a 61-year-old man, all of whom are from Kansas — suffered serious injuries, troopers said.
The driver of the RV — a 79-year-old man from Kansas — and the driver of the sedan — a 65-year-old Jacksonville woman — both suffered minor injuries, FHP said.
A news release from FHP shows the 48-year-old RV passenger and the 75-year-old RV passenger were not wearing seat belts.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, two outside lanes of northbound I-295 and the exit ramp to Old St. Augustine Road were blocked at last check.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department also responded to the crash.
