Bicyclist killed in crash with Lee Co. school bus

The Florida Highway Patrol says an Estero bicyclist was killed in a collision with a Lee County school bus Thursday morning.

Troopers say the crash happened just before 4:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Bonita Beach Rd. near Orr Rd., east of I-75.

Investigators say the bicyclist was traveling east on the westbound lane when the front of the bus hit the rear of the bicycle.

The bicyclist became separated from their bicycle and landed in a grassy area at the side of the road.

FHP says the 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Next-of-kin have been notified.

They said one 16-year-old male student was on board the bus along with the 52-year-old female driver. Neither was injured. A relief bus was sent to continue the scheduled route.

Administrators with the Lee County School District’s transportation department are also involved with the ongoing investigation.
