Sarasota Police Department Investigating Fatal Vehicle – Bicyclist Crash

SARASOTA, FL. – The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating a bicycle fatality crash that happened Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at about 7 p.m., in the City of Sarasota.

Officers responded to a vehicle versus bicyclist crash in the northbound lanes of North Tamiami Trail (US 41) near the intersection of North Tamiami Trail and 16th Street. Witnesses told officers the crash happened after an adult female on the bicycle attempted to cross North Tamiami Trail after coming westbound on 16th Street.

The name of the bicyclist is being withheld until the next of kin can be notified. The driver of the vehicle, an adult male, stayed on the scene and was cooperative with officers. The bicyclist was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries sustained in the crash.

The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit and Criminalistics Unit responded to the scene. The northbound lanes of North Tamiami Trail from 14th Street to 20th Street were closed for several hours. The crash remains under investigation by the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit.
